AMGA Foundation Launches New Initiative to Expand Lp(a) Testing and Reduce Cardiovascular Risk Across Health Systems

AMGA Foundation, supported by an independent grant from Lilly, has launched a 21-month initiative focused on helping medical groups and health systems develop and implement strategies to increase the number of adults who receive lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] testing, enabling early identification of elevated cardiovascular risk and supporting evidence-based clinical management for those identified with higher risk Lp(a) levels.

Alexandria, VA – AMGA Foundation, supported by an independent grant from Lilly, has launched a 21-month initiative focused on helping medical groups and health systems develop and implement strategies to increase the number of adults who receive lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] testing, enabling early identification of elevated cardiovascular risk and supporting evidence-based clinical management for those identified with higher risk Lp(a) levels.

The Cardiovascular Risk Optimization Best Practices Learning Collaborative is designed to provide a shared-learning platform for participating organizations to improve Lp(a) testing rates and evidence-based follow-up care through the development and implementation of quality improvement projects, best practices sharing, and peer-to-peer learning.

“Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death in the United States, yet Lp(a), a prevalent, genetically determined, and independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, is tested in fewer than 1% of adults who should receive it. That is a critical gap we have the tools and the will to close,” said John Kennedy, MD, AMGA Foundation president and AMGA chief medical officer. “This Collaborative will equip health systems with the strategies, data, and peer support they need to integrate Lp(a) testing into routine care and ultimately improve cardiovascular outcomes for millions of Americans.”

The following medical groups and health systems are participating in the Collaborative:

      • Allegheny Health Network
      • Coastal Carolina Health Care, P.A.
      • Cooper University Health Care
      • Henry Ford Health
      • Northwell Health
      • UC San Diego Health
      • Valley Medical Group

Participating organizations have access to a National Advisory Committee, a panel of subject matter and clinical experts who will guide participants in the development of their quality improvement initiatives and provide educational content. In addition, they have access to resources and activities from the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (https://www.nationalforum.org/) official partner of the Cardiovascular Risk Optimization Best Practices Learning Collaborative.

The Collaborative began in May 2026.
