About
The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) is the oldest and largest professional association devoted exclusively to the medical assisting profession in the United States. Established in 1956, the organization was created to advance the role of medical assistants in health care and to support the professional development of individuals working in this rapidly growing allied health field.
Since it's founding, the AAMA has worked to promote high standards of education, certification, and professional practice for medical assistants. The association administers the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA (AAMA)) credential, advocates for appropriate scope-of-practice protections, and provides continuing education and professional resources for its members.
The AAMA operates as a national professional membership association with a network of state societies and local chapters that support medical assistants through education, networking, and leadership opportunities. There are currently 22,000 members across the United States and 68,000 carry the CMA (AAMA) certification.
