AMGA Foundation Extends Osteoporosis Collaborative

AMGA Foundation, with support from Amgen, has launched its extension of the Osteoporosis Best Practices Learning Collaborative, known as the Osteoporosis Best Practices Learning Collaborative 2.0. This 12-month initiative will build on the learnings from the original collaborative, focusing on helping medical groups develop strategies to reduce fracture rates among female patients with osteoporosis.

Alexandria, VA – AMGA Foundation, with support from Amgen, has launched its extension of the Osteoporosis Best Practices Learning Collaborative, known as the Osteoporosis Best Practices Learning Collaborative 2.0. This 12-month initiative will build on the learnings from the original collaborative, focusing on helping medical groups develop strategies to reduce fracture rates among female patients with osteoporosis. Participating organizations will continue their work, implement new strategies, and scale their programs based on identified key components, such as patient and provider/staff education, care coordination, and clinical decision support tools.

The AMGA Best Practices Learning Collaborative model creates a community of knowledge that can assist participants to accelerate change and develop sustainable care processes. The best practices from the collaboratives are shared with the healthcare community to help providers improve care delivery nationwide.

“Nearly 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone density, and approximately one in two women age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Fractures often have a devastating effect on patients and lead to billions of dollars in direct care costs each year,” said John Kennedy, MD, AMGA Foundation president and AMGA chief medical officer. “The success of the first Osteoporosis Best Practices Learning Collaborative yielded such positive results, we are extending our work in female patients with osteoporosis to bring the best care to an even greater number by hard-wiring sustainable and scalable clinical improvements across our high-performing AMGA member organizations.”

The following medical groups and health systems were selected to participate in the collaborative:

HealthPartners

Maine Medical Partners

Ochsner Health

Prevea Health

SIMED Health

St. Luke’s University Health Network

UC San Diego Health

Utica Park Clinic

“We are proud to support the AMGA foundation’s extension of the Osteoporosis Best Practices Learning Collaborative and its mission to reduce fracture rates among female osteoporosis patients,” said Jyothis George, Amgen vice president and Global Medical Therapeutic Area head, General Medicine. “At Amgen, we are dedicated to education, awareness, and treatment efforts that will improve patient experiences. The second phase of the learning collaborative will extend these efforts and support medical groups in providing the best care possible.”

Participating organizations will have access to a National Advisory Committee for the Osteoporosis Collaborative, a panel of subject matter and clinical experts who will guide participants on developing objectives and educational content. In addition, they will have access to resources and activities from the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF), a nationally recognized organization and an official partner of the Osteoporosis Best Practices Learning Collaborative 2.0.

“BHOF is pleased to be part of this important initiative to help increase clinical knowledge of osteoporosis,” said Claire Gill, CEO, BHOF. “If we are to improve care for the more than 10 million Americans living with osteoporosis, we must ensure all healthcare providers are equipped to identify those at high risk for fractures and provide appropriate care.”

The collaborative will officially begin in June 2023.
