AMGA Offers Recommendations for Improving Medicare Advantage

AMGA today offered recommendations for ensuring Medicare Advantage (MA) continues to support the ability of AMGA members to address their patients’ health and social needs.

Alexandria, VA –AMGA today offered recommendations for ensuring Medicare Advantage (MA) continues to support the ability of AMGA members to address their patients’ health and social needs. By supporting innovation in benefit design and reducing administrative burdens on providers, MA can continue to help the healthcare system transition to value-based care.

In response to a Request for Information from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), AMGA recommended allowing more flexible, supplemental benefits to help beneficiaries with their social needs. Current policy largely limits such benefits to those with chronic conditions. Instead, MA plans should be able to offer such benefits to more patients.

“Medicare Advantage plans are increasingly popular with patients because of the affordable, high-quality care they offer,” said AMGA President and CEO Jerry Penso, M.D., M.B.A. “For AMGA providers, these benefits and flexibilities are building on that framework, while providing support to help providers and plans tackle disparities in health care.”

AMGA also offered recommendations on improving the technical aspects of the program. For example, to ensure risk adjustment is as accurate as possible, AMGA recommended that CMS permanently allow video and audio-only visits to satisfy the face-to-face requirement for the purpose of gathering diagnosis information for risk adjustment and care coordination purposes.

AMGA complete recommendations can be found here on the website.
