AMGA Applauds House Extension of Medicare Telehealth Policies

AMGA Supports the Advancing Telehealth Beyond COVID-19 Act of 2022 (H.R. 4040) extending certain COVID-19 telehealth waivers until Dec. 31, 2024

Alexandria, VA – Today, AMGA stated our support of House of Representatives-approved legislation that temporarily extends a number of Medicare telehealth flexibilities for an additional two years. The Advancing Telehealth Beyond COVID-19 Act of 2022 (H.R. 4040) extends certain COVID-19 telehealth waivers until Dec. 31, 2024. Among other policies, the legislation extends the current waiver of geographic and originating site restrictions, continues coverage of audio-only payments, and delays the in-person requirements for telehealth services for mental health treatment.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, our members dedicated considerable resources to create a telehealth infrastructure that ensured continuity of care and access for their communities,” said AMGA President and CEO Jerry Penso, M.D., M.B.A. “Patients have now come to expect care to be delivered outside the traditional office setting, and this legislation enables medical groups and integrated systems of care to continue to meet patient needs. We appreciate policymakers’ efforts to ensure these telehealth flexibilities remain available.”

AMGA applauds the House on its swift action and urges the Senate to pass this important legislation, which would provide stability for Medicare patients who rely on telehealth services. We will continue to advocate for this bill as the measure moves to the Senate.
