Keith A. Jones, MD

Keith Anthony (Tony) Jones, MD, is the Maurice S. Albin Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, president of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (UAHSF), and chief physician executive of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System. He is also senior associate dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Alabama Heersink School of Medicine medical centers and the third largest public hospital in the country. The UAHSF is the academic practice plan for approximately 1,500 physicians and 700 advance practice providers (APPs) and is charged with fulfilling the clinical and academic mission of the UAB Health System and UAB Heersink School of Medicine. The practice arrived over 1.5 million ambulatory patients, performed over 52,000 surgical procedures, and discharged over 50,000 patients from University Hospital in the most recent fiscal year. 

Working with the Chief Executive Officer of the UAB Health System and Dean of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, Dr. Jones oversees and directs a broad spectrum of practice optimization and transformation initiatives that include the growth of an expansive clinical practice portfolio and the establishment of value-based models of care. He is also responsible for forging new professional relationships with community subspecialty physicians to facilitate alignment with the academic departments and the strategic hospital affiliations and alliances. This work enables the health system improve statewide access to care while generating additional resources to accelerate the growth and impact of the education and research programs.  

Dr. Jones has a long history of professional service. He currently services as Chair of the Board for the Alabama Physicians Network, the Health System Accountable Care Organizations. Academically, he is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), where he has served on and led numerous committees. Most notable was his tenure as a member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER). Dr. Jones is also a member of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS), where he most recently served as Chair of the Board of Directors. The IARS is the parent company for one of the world’s premier clinical science journals, Anesthesia and Analgesia, and supports anesthesia-related basic and clinical research internationally by funding research grants and working in partnership with other like-minded organizations, such as the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists. Finally, he is recognized as one of the specialty’s key thought leaders, serving on the inaugural Board of Directors of the American Society for Enhanced Recovery and as a member of the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee for the National Brain Health Initiative.
