CRC Screening: Problems, Interventions, and Tips

In 2021, AMGA brought together 12 medical groups and health systems for the Colorectal Cancer Screening Quality and Innovation Collective (CRC QuIC). The program enabled participants to engage in discussions and activities around improving CRC screening, sharing current care practices, and creating new models and care paths.

Below are the motivating needs — noted as "problems" for brevity — identified as essential aspects to CRC screening. Participants implemented interventions to address these needs and we are sharing their key learnings here.

  1. Problem: Lack of screening and identification of patients at average risk and high risk for colorectal cancer

  2. Problem: Disparities in care

  3. Problem:  Lack of a clinical workflow/pathway for CRC screening

  4. Problem: Lack of patient awareness and education about colorectal cancer, screening and prevention

  5. Problem: Inadequate clinical decision support tools

  6. Problem: Lack of timely follow-up after an abnormal CRC screening
