Building a Leadership and Talent Strategy

This one-hour session will highlight Mayo Clinic’s leadership philosophy, model, and capabilities, introduce the leadership development program modeled after Ram Charan’s pipeline approach, and describe the talent succession planning process. In addition, Dawn Peters will share research measuring the impact of leadership behavior, as well as lessons learned in building a leadership and talent strategy.

How a Health System and a Multispecialty Medical Partnered for Clinical Leadership Development
Lee Anne Wong, M.D., Director, Recruitment and Retention, Sutter Medical Group, and Sue Gotelli, Director, Physician and APC Leadership Development, Sutter Health

Many medical groups find it difficult to identify clinician leaders, as there is often no structured approach to assessing, developing, implementing, or evaluating their current leadership development programs. Learn how Sutter Medical Group launched a talent review and succession planning process to proactively identify and cultivate a leadership pool that would lead them successfully into the future. Through an innovative partnership, Sutter Health helped transform Sutter Medical Group’s leadership from informal roles and accountabilities to a formalized infrastructure aligned with business and growth strategies. This presentation will outline how a multispecialty medical group partnered with its integrated health system to successfully identify and foster clinician leaders.

The Strategic Imperative of a Physician Leadership Training Program
Kenneth B. Robbins, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Hawaii Pacific Health

Physician leadership and physician/administrative partnerships are essential keys to success for high-performing organizations. During this presentation, you’ll hear from Hawaii Pacific Health’s Dr. Robbins, who for nearly two decades has led physician leadership efforts -– ranging from a collaboration with the University of Hawaii business school to a dedicated in-house physician leadership training program. He’ll describe the case for an investment in physician leadership training as a strategic imperative, discuss the challenges faced by physician leaders, and detail the nuts and bolts of developing a successful in-house program.

Developing a Results-Driven Onboarding Academy and Leadership Institute for Physicians
Jamie N. Carlson, Chief Human Resources Officer, and James Swegle, M.D., Trauma Surgeon and Associate Medical Director, The Iowa Clinic

Healthcare transformation starts with physician engagement and leadership. The Iowa Clinic recognizes that successful cultural onboarding and physician leadership development are keys to alignment, engagement, and retention of its physicians. In this presentation, hear how The Iowa Clinic launched a formal onboarding academy to immerse new physicians in the organization’s culture and values, and continues to develop future physician leaders through their Physician Leadership Institute.

Provider Onboarding and Culture Development

To succeed as a high-performing healthcare system, strategic onboarding of providers is paramount. No longer viewed as basic orientation, onboarding is a strategic endeavor for assimilating new providers into the organization’s culture and ensuring engagement and alignment. During this session, you’ll learn how Atlantic Medical Group (AMG) introduced physician practice liaisons as part of new clinician onboarding in order to:

  • Establish a mutually beneficial mentoring relationship between a liaison and a new provider
  • Onboard the new provider to AMG history, culture, operations, and resources
  • Provide resources and a point of contact to ensure a successful clinical experience
  • Improve new provider engagement and identification with AMG

    Accommodations

    After you receive your registration confirmation, you will be eligible to reserve your hotel room at the Hilton San Diego Airport/Harbor Island. In order to receive the special AMGA conference rate of $199 per night, please use the dedicated link provided in your confirmation email. 

    Reservations must be made by Friday, December 21, 2018 in order to receive the discounted AMGA rate. After this date, rates and availability of rooms cannot be guaranteed.

    Cancellations, Refunds, and Substitutions

    Members: Cancellations received more than 72 hours in advance and substitutions will not incur any fees. However, no-shows or cancellations within 72 hours will incur a fee of $125.

    Non-members: Cancellations must be submitted in writing no later than two weeks prior to the event date in order to receive a refund, less a $75 processing fee. No-shows are not eligible for refunds. Substitutions are welcome and will not incur a processing fee. Cancellations after the date are not eligible for refunds.
