AMGA Congratulates Alex Azar on His Confirmation to Lead HHS

Alexandria, VA – Dr. Jerry Penso, M.D., M.B.A., AMGA’s president and chief executive officer, congratulates Alex Azar on his confirmation as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. During his confirmation hearing, Azar said that value-based care would be one of his top priorities as HHS secretary.

“AMGA is eager to work with Secretary Azar on achieving our shared goal of a value-based health care system,” Penso said. “As leaders in the transition from volume to value-based care, AMGA and our members look forward to working with the Secretary on developing policies that support and recognize integrated systems of care and a value-based approach to health care delivery.”

Sec. Azar recognizes that the fee-for-service payment system does not appropriately reward outcomes. During his confirmation hearing, Azar stated that Medicare can “shift the focus in our healthcare system from paying for procedures and sickness to paying for health and outcomes.” AMGA agrees with this sentiment and will be a resource for Azar and his team as we work together to remove the obstacles to value-based care and create a health care system that recognizes and rewards value.
