Dr. Eric Topol Addresses Healthcare Leaders at AMGA 2017 Annual Conference
More than 2,100 gather in Texas to advance high performance health

Alexandria, VA – Eric J. Topol, M.D., Director, Scripps Translational Science Institute; Chief Academic Officer, Scripps Health, addressed healthcare leaders at AMGA’s 2017 Annual Conference  held last week, March 22-25, at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.

More than 2,100 attendees gathered at the conference to share best practices for succeeding in the dynamic healthcare industry. In his presentation, “The Future of Medicine: A Look at Innovation to Create the Care of Tomorrow,” Dr. Topol discussed the power of technology to personalize medicine. He spoke on the coming impact of artificial intelligence and how smart phone apps including glucose testing, sleep studies, and ultrasounds allow patients to become true partners in their care and treatments.

"The future of medicine is tied to the smart phone," said Dr. Topol. “Medicine now gets personal and we now have a way to get there.” He stressed that considering technology, consumer demands and the rise of artificial intelligence, healthcare is at the edge of a precipice of great change. He predicted in the not-so distant future, “on-demand medicine will become the norm for people.”

Questions from the audience of healthcare executives were many. Dr. Topol noted, “While the medical community can be resistant to change, it is change that can take us back to how medicine used to be — personal."

With more than 100 educational sessions, the AMGA Annual Conference addressed the most important issues in healthcare today such as innovative care models, opiate addiction, virtual care, and practice management, providing an opportunity for leaders to learn from one another and together chart the future of the ever-evolving healthcare industry.

Next year’s AMGA Annual Conference will be held March 7-10 in Phoenix, AZ.
