The past two years were a whirlwind of unprecedented events for medical groups and health systems. COVID-related challenges varied from severely limiting access to elective services to nearly unmanageable surges in patient volumes. At the same time, extensive changes were made to evaluation and management coding (E/M) guidelines and work relative value unit (wRVU) weights, which make benchmarking to historical data and future planning especially difficult. This interactive pre-conference session will feature case studies and best practices from AMGA members and insights from AMGA experts.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify paths to achieve resiliency
- Delineate adaptations for effectively using market data
- Discuss approaches in physician and advanced practice provider compensation plans
- Describe strategies for aligning compensation to support the move to value-based care

Successful Implementation of Compensation Redesign and the 2021 Medicare Fee Schedule Changes Impact on Physician Compensation
Last year, the Stanford Medicine: University Medical Partners - a large multi-specialty medical group in the Bay Area - took the bold step of adopting the 2021 Medicare Fee Schedule changes into their compensation structure while most of the medical groups in the nation, kept the 2020 Medicare values and rates. The presentation will demonstrate how the medical group navigated through the market uncertainty while ensuring that the clinicians received the benefit of the intended outcome of the Medicare fee schedule changes.

The Compensation Design Matrix
In this interactive session, attendees will break into small groups to collaboratively build “theoretical” comp models that will be stress-tested in real-time using the AMGA Consulting output matrix. By using actual data, our presenters will visually demonstrate the financial impact each of the test models will have on your organization, with guidance on how to synchronize strategy with reality.

The High-Performing Physician Enterprise: The Seven Domains That Lead to Operational and Financial Success

Using key details from the 2021 Medical Group Operations and Finance Survey our team will outline a new and exciting methodology that will better assess medical group performance and allow organizations to course-correct where needed to achieve high performance.

Value-Based Contracting
In AMGA’s 2021 Summer Pulse Survey, respondents predicted that revenues coming from a value-based payment model will increase by an average of 15% in the next three years, including an increase of 23% from Medicare Advantage (MA) and 12% from the federal accountable care organization (ACO) program. With the move to value ramping up so quickly, medical groups and health systems need to become experts in value-based contracting so they can obtain appropriate reimbursement rates and meaningful incentives, both financial and administrative, to support the investments they have made to move to value.
This immersion session will address contracting challenges in transitioning to value-based care, including integration, physician engagement and access to data, as well as take attendees through key aspects of smart provider contracting.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe practical approaches to maximizing margins
- Delineate where medical groups have leverage and payers have flexibility
- Discuss tips on how to avoid costly contracting mistakes
