AMGA Survey Shows Physician Benefits Packages Remain Largely Unchanged Over Five Years
Part-Time Physician Employment on the Rise
Alexandria, VA – Results from AMGA’s 2018 Provider Benefits Survey show core discretionary benefits, such as retirement plans, medical insurance, income protection, time off, and professional development, did not significantly change from 2014 to 2018. However, the prevalence of voluntary benefits and employer-sponsored concierge services has steadily risen during that period. The survey also showed an increase in the number of part-time primary care providers who are eligible for benefits from their employer.
The survey, which was conducted by AMGA’s subsidiary, AMGA Consulting, showed a gradual increase in the number of providers working less than 1.0 FTE who were eligible for benefits in 2018 than in 2014, the last time AMGA conducted a survey to assess provider benefits packages. This increase was most significant among primary care providers.
“The healthcare industry is currently experiencing a physician shortage, especially in primary care,” said Elizabeth Siemsen, AMGA Consulting director. “The expanded offerings and lowered FTE thresholds we saw in this survey indicate short-staffed organizations are looking to fill employment gaps with part-time physicians and are using employee benefits as a way to attract talent.”
AMGA’s 2018 Provider Benefits Survey highlights market norms for provider benefits, and includes comparative data on retirement plans, medical and dental insurance plans, income protection offerings, time -off, and additional options like health and wellness, family support, recruitment and retention, security, and planning resources. The 2018 survey received 83 responses, more than doubling the number received in 2014.
“A competitive benefits packages can sometimes mean the difference between hiring a talented physician and losing that physician to a competitor,” said Fred Horton, M.H.A., AMGA Consulting president. “Since there isn’t a great deal of information on physician benefits packages out there, this survey fills a void. It gives our members an idea of what everyone else is offering, which allows them to compete for talent on a more level playing field.”
