CMS Formally Delays Stage 3 of Meaningful Use until 2017 and Grants Flexibility in Meeting 2014 Standards

On August 29, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) jointly put on display a final rule that provides physicians, hospitals, and critical access hospitals flexibility in implementing certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) in 2014 to meet the Meaningful Use standards in the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record Incentive Programs. The final rule also officially delays Meaningful Use Stage 3 until 2017, as proposed earlier this year.

Providers can use 2011 Edition CEHRT, or a combination of 2011 and 2014 Edition CEHRT, for the 2014 reporting period.  Beginning in 2015, all eligible physicians and hospitals will need to attest to Meaningful Use using 2014 Edition CEHRT.

The CMS press release with further details about the final rule is available here.
