Dr. Jerry Penso Named New AMGA Chief Medical and Quality Officer

ALEXANDRIA, VA--The American Medical Group Association (AMGA) today announced that Jerry Penso, M.D., M.B.A., is joining the organization as chief medical and quality officer, effective September 1, 2012.  

In his new role at AMGA, Dr. Penso will work with President and Chief Executive Officer Donald W. Fisher, Ph.D., CAE, and the AMGA Board of Directors to design, develop, and implement AMGA's initiatives related to quality management and research on behalf of the membership.  He will oversee efforts of AMGA's philanthropic arm, the American Medical Group Foundation (AMGF) and play a key role in quality initiatives of AMGA's for-profit informatics and analytic company, Anceta, LLC, a collaborative data warehouse. In addition, he will contribute to setting goals and objectives in concert with AMGA's organizational strategic plan and serve as a member of the association's Strategic Planning Team.

Dr. Penso is a physician executive dedicated to improving the healthcare delivery system. He currently serves as medical director, continuum of care for Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group. Sharp HealthCare, a 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recipient, is the largest integrated healthcare delivery system in San Diego, California. Sharp Rees-Stealy, an affiliated multispecialty medical group, has 18 sites throughout the county with more than 350 physicians and serves 200,000 patients. Dr. Penso coordinates pay-for-performance initiatives and chronic disease management for the medical group, leading Sharp Rees-Stealy to statewide recognition for outstanding clinical quality outcomes. He currently serves on the Integrated Healthcare Association Board of Directors, a statewide policy group that brings together top decision makers from the major sectors of the healthcare industry.   

He previously practiced as a family physician with Sharp Mission Park Medical Group for over 14 years. He received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, his medical degree from the University of Southern California., and an M.B.A. from San Diego State University. He has received numerous awards, including the Mead-Johnson Award for Graduate Education in Family Practice. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the San Diego County Medical Association, and the California Medical Association.
