AMGA Reports 11th Straight Year of Substantial Growth in 2011

ALEXANDRIA, VA-The American Medical Group Association (AMGA) announced significant growth in 2011, during which it added 45 new member groups, representing more than 8,500 physicians. In addition, AMGA reports that 2012 has started strongly with 15 additional new members representing approximately 1,200 physicians joining.

AMGA now represents more than 400 of the nation's largest and most prestigious medical groups, including 125,000 physicians treating approximately 130 million patients, more than 1 in 3 Americans.  The average size of an AMGA member group is 304 physicians. This represents the 11th straight year of substantial growth for AMGA's membership and illustrates that AMGA's mission and vision of improving health care for patients by supporting multispecialty medical groups and other organized systems of care is resonating with healthcare leaders across the country.

The membership growth was especially remarkable given the economic environment of 2011, and can be attributed to a variety of factors, including AMGA's leadership in reform efforts that foster the creation of community-based entities accountable for comprehensive healthcare services, referred to as accountable care organizations (ACOs), especially its widely recognized advocacy efforts related to the successful revision of the proposed ACO regulations in the Medicare Shared Savings Program. Also growth was related to ACO educational and networking resources available to members, as well as other valuable member benefits.

"In a time where many associations are struggling to maintain membership, AMGA’s retention and growth confirms that our mission and vision have focused us on providing the key programs and services to our members that will position them, and us, to succeed now and in the future," said Donald W. Fisher, Ph.D., CAE, AMGA's President and CEO.  "That we are in the right place at the right time is no accident -- a lot of hard work has gone into cultivating an environment that recognizes the value of coordinated, accountable care.  But, there is still much work to be done to prove that our model does indeed deliver the most value for patients. Being an AMGA member will continue to be a key component for medical groups as they strive to evolve into high-performing care organizations."

By joining AMGA, these organizations now have access to unparalleled networking opportunities with peer organizations throughout the U.S. as well to a full slate of member benefits, including political advocacy, educational and networking programs and publications, benchmarking data services, and financial and operations assistance.
