Donor Spotlight on Inova Health System with President and Chief Executive Officer J. Stephen Jones, M.D., M.B.A., FACS

This month’s Donor Spotlight is on Inova Health System featuring President and Chief Executive Officer J. Stephen Jones, M.D., M.B.A., FACS. Inova Health System employs more than 18,000 team members and serves more than 2 million individuals annually through an integrated network of hospitals, primary and specialty care practices, emergency and urgent care centers, outpatient services, and destination institutes. Founded in 1956 as the Fairfax Hospital Association, Inova has grown with its surrounding community and the region to provide a full spectrum of health services, including Northern Virginia’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Inova recently made a generous Cabinet Leadership gift to the Campaign for a Healthier America.

AMGA Foundation: Inova has positioned itself as being very patient-centric. How has the work of the Foundation helped Inova uphold its mission to meet each patient’s unique needs every time?

Jones: Our mission is to provide world-class health care to each person in every community we have the privilege to serve. With this focus on high reliability and excellence, AMGA and Inova share a similar purpose. Both organizations keep the patient at the center of all we do. We deeply appreciate the insights gained from our affiliation with the AMGA Foundation, including research into best practices and quality metrics. The opportunity to confer with peer groups is an invaluable asset.

AMGA Foundation: Can you elaborate on community outreach Inova has conducted that is changing the trajectory of chronic disease?

Jones: Across America, there is a sharp increase in the number of people who suffer from complex, chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. Here in Northern Virginia, Inova has created the Transitional Services program, a multifaceted approach ensuring patients leaving the hospital with chronic diseases successfully transition to a medical home within the community. One component of the program is R.N. and M.S.W. case manager outreach to patients with chronic diseases, providing telephonic case consultation around medication reconciliation, disease management, coaching, and follow-up related to their conditions.

Additionally, Inova has several programs that provide education and medical care for diabetes and other metabolic disorders, including the Center for Wellness and Metabolic Health with nurse educators. Specifically for children, the Healthy Plate initiative focuses on teaching children to eat healthy, thereby preventing chronic diseases such as diabetes. Our Simplicity Health Clinics provide care to community members who are uninsured and not eligible for indigent programs. These clinics are located in areas where the help is needed most to assist patients in the management of their chronic diseases.

AMGA Foundation: Can you extrapolate on how the Measure Up/Pressure Down® and Together 2 Goal® campaigns have benefited Inova?

Jones: The Measure Up/Pressure Down® campaign provided insights to Inova teams in adopting several evidence-based care processes to better address hypertension control for our patient population. Measure Up/Pressure Down® was a valuable collaborative effort, offering health organizations nationwide an opportunity to work together, positively impacting patients and families by reducing risk for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

Inova’s participation in Together 2 Goal® added a new dimension to our care of patients with diabetes. Across our system, we have many resources to support our healthcare teams, but being part of the Together 2 Goal® initiative provided additional best practice strategies from leading health systems all over the country, further strengthening our diabetes management abilities. We are proud that Inova was able to support the Together 2 Goal® campaign by partnering with AMGA and ADA on its National Day of Action. Additionally, we are excited that AMGA has extended the campaign for another two years based upon the benefit it provided to our patients and the community.

AMGA Foundation: Why do you feel it is important for your group to participate in AMGA Foundation programs as well as support it financially?

Jones: Inova’s mission to provide world-class health care is aligned with AMGA’s, which empowers the delivery of coordinated, patient-centered, high-quality, value-driven health care. We believe that it is essential to share best practices, learn from the best of the best, and support the strengthening of high-quality healthcare delivery in every community.
