Anceta/AMGA Collaborative Data Warehouse
Background

Anceta is accessing electronic health information from medical groups that have IT infrastructures currently more advanced than that typically found throughout the Nation’s general healthcare system. Since these multispecialty group practices “own” a greater portion of a patient’s complete health care picture, usually with common patient identifiers among ambulatory care and hospital information systems, data can be more easily collected and integrated for data warehousing. The design of the Collaborative Data Warehouse, and all of the data collection and scrubbing operations, conform to all HIPAA and other relevant privacy requirements.

The Collaborative Data Warehouse will also provide aggregated, fully de-identified health and healthcare data (from patient records rather than solely from claims data) to various healthcare product and service providers throughout the industry. These offerings, including customized analyses and reports and access to customized data marts and data sets, will address the ongoing needs of pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies, as well as contract research organizations and healthcare information providers who serve these industries.

The Data Warehouse also is unique in the depth and scope of data it will collect and analyze. Most of AMGA’s multispecialty medical groups from which Anceta will source the data have in-house laboratories and radiology departments. In addition, over 60 of AMGA’s largest medical groups support in-house retail pharmacies, and about 70 of the groups have inpatient facilities. Many other clinical systems are maintained for the purpose of providing support to a wide range of in-house therapies and advanced procedures. AMGA’s medical groups are also among the first to adopt electronic medical records systems. Given the multispecialty nature of the groups and their prestigious reputations in their communities, their patients receive a full scope of care over long periods of time irrespective of changes in their insurance coverage. The resulting patient data that is collected and maintained by the groups provides the single best and largest source of longitudinal patient information in the country.

A major milestone attained by Anceta is a recently completed Data Warehouse pilot program, involving the aggregation of data from three of the larger AMGA medical groups. Anceta’s primary operational components which were successfully tested in the pilot included: data extraction and normalization to a standard data schema; database development; data integration; formation of longitudinal patient records and data sets; and preliminary analysis and reporting tools. These three medical groups alone provide care for over 1.5 million patients.

In its next stage, the Collaborative will be transitioning to a production-level data warehouse that will involve 10 multispecialty medical groups that have already committed to participate, representing more than 4.5 million active patients. Over the next 3-5 years, Anceta is planning to grow the Data Warehouse to a database involving over 25-50 medical groups representing some 8-15 million longitudinal patient records.

Anceta’s business operations are guided by Anceta’s founding partners, AMGA, Aventis Pharmaceuticals, and Accenture, which have provided valuable financial support, services, and strategic guidance throughout Anceta’s inception and development. Anceta sought a focused data warehouse and analytics partner to undertake the transition to a production-level, commercial environment, and it has recently executed a long-term agreement with Convergence CT which will develop and operate the AMGA/Anceta National Collaborative Data Warehouse (for full press release, please click here). The Collaborative Data Warehouse will be a unique source of health care information, with the capacity to assess and compare multiple points of care, physician practices, and administrative variables in a coordinated care setting.
