Committees and Councils
This integral involvement in national policy formulation provides
AMGA with the knowledge and expertise to intervene effectively when
necessary, to better serve members in an advisory capacity, and to
draw on members’ experience when developing AMGA positions
reflective of their needs and political realities. Political Affairs’
staff consult frequently with the AMGA Public Policy Committee and
the Council of Attorneys, as well as the AMGA Board and other
interested members, regarding political developments and AMGA
positioning. Members’ valued expertise is a significant asset to
AMGA staff, on this committee as well as on others dedicated to
specific issues.
In addition, AMGA is an active member of several coalitions and
ad hoc groups of health care organizations formed to address
specific issue areas. In such groups, AMGA represents the
perspective of medical group practices, assuring that members’
views are addressed and that policy stands are not detrimental to
AMGA members’ interests.
Public Policy Committee
The Public Policy Committee (PPC) has a critical role in determining
AMGA’s federal legislative and regulatory direction by helping
identify, and determine the impact of, key issues for AMGA members.
These 12 member representatives speak for the diverse AMGA
membership as they provide recommendations to the Board and identify
the AMGA annual priority issues for advocacy efforts. AMGA also
relies on PPC members to amplify its representational voice, as well
as provide valuable data and supportive information to buttress
issue advocacy before agencies and Congress.
Council of Medical Group Practice Attorneys
The Council of Attorneys was formed in 1995 to facilitate the
exchange of information among the legal representatives of the
nation’s leading medical groups with regard to legal and
regulatory issues facing group practices. The COA conferences
provide an opportunity for these attorneys to share with their peers
their responses to professional challenges in an informal collegial
environment. The informational and educational opportunities
continue beyond these conferences, as documents and information are
shared for evaluation and critique among COA members throughout the
year. In addition to enhancing these attorneys’ information
resources, the COA also serves AMGA and its policy staff in an
advisory role on legal and legislative issues of importance, and to
enhance advocacy efforts.
Council of Compliance Officers
The Council of Compliance Officers assists those charged
with assuring that the most prestigious medical group practices are
prepared for the evolving challenges in professional, legal and
regulatory compliance. Through this forum, these professionals
obtain information and education to keep them knowledgeable of
current developments and prepared for the future. By meeting and
communicating with their peers, they exchange valuable insights,
explore new applications, and consider implementation strategies to
meet demanding mandates. AMGA sponsors opportunities throughout the
year for medical group compliance officers to meet, as well as have
continual availability of inter-group communication and new
information on latest developments.
Medicare Advantage
The AMGA’s Medicare Advantage ad hoc committee is composed of
representatives of AMGA members who offer capitated health care
services. Not only does this highly knowledgeable group direct AMGA
advocacy efforts to its issues of greatest concern, it also provides
AMGA with supportive data to enhance AMGA’s persuasive capability
before Congress and Federal agencies. Formation of ad hoc advisory
groups such as this exemplifies AMGA’s mission of providing
knowledgeable, effective representation of its diverse membership’s
concerns.
Pension Committee
Organization of the AMGA’s Ad Hoc Pension Committee
well-illustrates AMGA’s prompt response to membership issues.
During Congressional hearings on revision of the benchmark for
pension contributions, AMGA brought a group of AMGA member
representatives to a meeting with Treasury Department officials to
discuss healthcare employers’ concerns with certain reform
options. This informal working group of AMGA members will work with
the Treasury Department as develops regulations that direct changes
beneficial to AMGA members.
