
Position: Department Administrator, Internal Medicine
VCU School of Medicine, established in 1838, has more than 700 students, 515 residents and 119 fellows, and a 96 percent residency match rate. The 2,400 faculty members represent more than 200 specialties. The School also offers master's degrees, doctoral and interdisciplinary programs in combination with M.D. degrees. The school has earned $117.4MM in total award dollars, including $71MM in NIH funding. The largest single provider of indigent healthcare in the commonwealth, the medical center is the site for the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center and is recognized internationally for care in organ transplants, head and spinal cord trauma, burn healing and cancer treatment. The School of Medicine has started construction on a new 200,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art medical education building designed by I.M. Pei that will provide modern classrooms and simulation laboratories.
The Department of Internal Medicine, contributing over 25 percent of the School of Medicine total revenue ($53MM annual budget), is comprised of 11 clinical divisions. Research is very strong in the Department with investigations in basic sciences, clinical and health services research. The Department's educational ranking places it in the top 25% of medical education programs in the United States. Current annual research expenditures exceed $15.5MM, the Department ranks 53rd nationally in NIH funding, and the department has 29 endowed professorships. Faculty members are actively involved in multi-disciplinary research and education efforts through five distinct institutes. The Department is comprised of 223 faculty and 500 staff.
The Department of Internal Medicine is seeking an Administrator to support the new Department Chairman in achieving goals in restructuring the department operating infrastructure, financial performance, clinical operations, and, in increased recruitment of physician scientists. With excellent financial and administrative support, the Department Chairman seeks a leader who can build productive relationships throughout the organization, bring sophisticated operating expertise and offer efficacious challenge to existing systems and practices.
To be successful in this role, the Administrator must bring a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the healthcare industry, as well as five years of demonstrable success leading a similarly complex department that furthers efforts in research, education and clinical care. Experience in managing the grants and contracts function is essential, as are superlative financial management and analysis skills. As importantly, the next Department Administrator must bring an innate drive for performance improvement and excellence to both complement the Chairman and exemplify the model of a contemporary Department Administrator. A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree and CPA/CMPE are preferred.
