Redefining Health Care: Value-Based Competition as a Way to
Improve Quality and Efficiency
Michael Porter, Ph.D., Bishop William Lawrence University
Professor, Harvard Business School and Author, Redefining Health
Care
Health care is on a collision course between patient needs and
economic reality. In today's dysfunctional healthcare competition,
players strive not to create value for patients but to capture more
revenue, shift costs, and restrict services. To reform health care,
we must reform the nature of competition, itself. Dr. Porter’s
research indicates that value-based competition among healthcare
providers is the vehicle needed to improve patient value and
clinical outcomes. Can medical groups provide the solution
this nation needs to save lives, reduce costs, and improve
efficiencies through restructured care delivery and measurement? In
this thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Porter outlines imperatives
which coordinated systems of care need to establish to provide
first-class care and value to the patients they serve. Upon
completion of this activity, participants should be able to list the
imperatives as described by the speaker to establish high-quality
coordinated care systems; evaluate the system of care provided to
patients; and discuss plans to reform the healthcare competition
playing field. |
