Election 2008: How Will Your Vote Influence the Future of American Health Care?
Newt Gingrich, Former Speaker of the House (R-GA) and Author, Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America
Bill Bradley, Former U.S. Senator (D-NJ) and Author, The New American Story
Moderated by Ceci Connolly, National Staff Writer, Washington Post
America’s ailing healthcare system will be hotly debated in the 2008 elections as policymakers struggle for solutions to the nation’s continued challenges of rising costs, limited access, and variable quality. Gingrich and Bradley will explore each of the party's healthcare platforms and provide insights into how the potential presidential candidates plan to reshape the future of the U.S. healthcare system. This interactive session, moderated by Ceci Connolly of the Washington Post, will also provide an opportunity for attendees to participate by posing questions to the panelists.  Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to describe the healthcare policy platform of the 2008 presidential candidates, evaluate their organizations’ future direction based on these party platforms, and debate the future of the healthcare system based on the information received in this session.

Redefining Health Care: Value-Based Competition as a Way to Improve Quality and Efficiency
Michael Porter, Ph.D., Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, Harvard Business School and Author,
Redefining Health Care
Health care is on a collision course between patient needs and economic reality. In today's dysfunctional healthcare competition, players strive not to create value for patients but to capture more revenue, shift costs, and restrict services. To reform health care, we must reform the nature of competition, itself. Dr. Porter’s research indicates that value-based competition among healthcare providers is the vehicle needed to improve patient value and clinical outcomes.  Can medical groups provide the solution this nation needs to save lives, reduce costs, and improve efficiencies through restructured care delivery and measurement? In this thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Porter outlines imperatives which coordinated systems of care need to establish to provide first-class care and value to the patients they serve.  Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to list the imperatives as described by the speaker to establish high-quality coordinated care systems; evaluate the system of care provided to patients; and discuss plans to reform the healthcare competition playing field.

In an Instant:  How One Moment Can Define a Lifetime
Bob Woodruff, ABC News Anchor/Reporter and Author,
In an Instant
In January 2006, while reporting on U.S. and Iraqi security forces, Woodruff was seriously injured by a roadside bomb that struck his vehicle near Taji, Iraq. In an instant, his life had been altered forever. Woodruff recounts those shattering moments when he believed his life was over, gratefully describing the bravery of the men and women who saved his life, his subsequent numerous surgeries, and the painful recovery he’s still undergoing. Sharing stories from his moving and inspirational bestselling memoir, In an Instant, Woodruff will leave you with a new understanding of the fragility of life, the strength of family, and how to survive and overcome even the most tragic of circumstances. Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to reflect on the personal and professional challenges of their lives and find inner strength to tackle and overcome these challenges.
