The Dr. Scott Hayworth and the Honorable Dr. Nan Hayworth Lecture
Opening General Session: Health Care Remixed: Changing the Face of Primary Care
Zubin “ZDoggMD” Damania, M.D., Founder, Turntable Health and Clinical
Assistant Professor of Medicine, UNLV School of Medicine
Best known by his alter ego, “ZDoggMD,” viral sensation Zubin Damania, M.D.,
uses a mix of rap, humor, and creative storytelling to educate patients and
providers about today’s dysfunctional healthcare system and the need for
revitalization through his popular social media parody videos. As the founder of
Turntable Health, an innovative healthcare startup spearheaded by Zappos’ CEO
Tony Hsieh, Dr. Damania continues to effect change, pushing to make Health 3.0 a reality.
In this high-energy, entertaining presentation, Dr. Damania will describe an
ideal model of care, Health 3.0, where evidence-based medicine promotes better
care, but doesn’t challenge care teams with inflexible processes. This way of
practicing medicine will allow care teams to better achieve the outcomes that
actually matter to their patients, and holds patients accountable to take control
of their health. Embracing a holistic approach, this model recognizes that
interiors matter as much as exteriors: the mind-body connection and the
conscious experience of human beings is no longer discounted. Each member of the
healthcare team supports one another while bringing their unique gifts to bear,
and clinician-leaders guide organizations with compassion and wisdom.
You’ll leave inspired with a vision of medicine as an evolving, beautifully
complex system, where every aspect of the paradigm is unique and autonomous yet an integral part of the larger whole.
General Session: Preparing for an Era of Healthcare Transparency
Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H., Johns Hopkins Surgeon, and New York Times Bestselling Author
Over the last decade, neither error rates nor costs have come down, despite
scientific progress and efforts to curb expenses. Why? To patients, the
healthcare system is a black box. Doctors and hospitals are unaccountable, and
the lack of transparency leaves both bad providers and systemic flaws unchecked.
Patients need to know more of what healthcare workers know, so they can make
informed choices. Accountability in health care would expose dangerous
practices, reward good performance, and force positive change nationally, using
the power of the free market. How do we take health care to this next level?
Focused on improving quality and outcomes and eliminating unnecessary tests
and treatments, Martin Makary, M.D., M.P.H., is an expert in quality measurement
science and healthcare innovation. You’ll be immersed in content aimed at
describing the state of quality and patient safety in America, as well as trends
in health care that impact patient safety and outcomes. Dr. Makary will
describe specific quality improvement strategies implemented across systems to
help healthcare leaders to prepare for the future era of publicly reported
metrics, and will review best practices for infection prevention and the role of
hospital culture in improving outcomes.
